What made you interested in studying sleep?

My interest in getting into the sleep business started in 2014, when a friend of mine arrived at dinner wearing these big, bright, ugly, orange-lens safety glasses. I thought for sure he was playing a joke on me. We weren’t in a five-star restaurant, but people were dressed nicely and his look was out of place. Eventually, I have to ask, “What’s up with the safety glasses?”

He explained hat his lenses were made to block artificial blue light. Devices such as cellphones emit this blue light that affects the level of melatonin your body produces; a chemical that helps us sleep at night. Essentially, he said blue light tricks your body into thinking it is daytime.

Like a bolt of lightening, it all made sense. My long-term sleeping issues and lack of productivity during the day may have been from overexposure to blue light at night. I decided to perform an experiment. I went home and pulled out a pair of yellow-tinted ski googles and although they looked ridiculous, I wore them an hour before bed for the next week. I slept like a baby.

There was however, one problem- I couldn’t wear them in a social setting without people thinking I was some sort of weirdo. Not wanting to disrupt my newfound healthy sleep pattern, I felt stuck in my apartment. I thought, “what if I could create a blue light-blocking lens and put it in a stylish glasses frame?”

I then partnered with my brother Tristan and began Swanwick Sleep, starting out with our own line of fashionable blue light blocking glasses. We have not expanded into other products that help people get their best sleep possible.

How do blue light blocking glasses work?

Innovative lenses filter out blue light on the visible wavelength spectrum that has been proven to disrupt sleep. The lenses allow all other light to be transmitted, leaving you free to watch TV and use electronic devices without negatively affecting your body’s clock. This is particularly important in the evening, when your body’s natural sleep process can be inhibited by exposure to blue light, preventing you from falling asleep or having good quality sleep.

What makes your blue light blocking glasses different?

Many blue blockers on the market are just yellow-tinted glasses or ballistic safety goggles that provide a small amount of protection against blue light. Swannies Blue Light Blocking Glasses and Computer Eye-wear are FDA registered and have been extensively researched, designed, and manufactured specifically to block blue light; particularly the specific wavelengths shown to cause retina damage and inhibit the body’s natural production of melatonin, the sleep-promoting hormone.

Style matters- being honest with you here, Swanwick Sleep didn’t invent the blue light blocking glasses. We are, however, responsible for making it look better. Before, the blue light blocking glasses available on the market use to be in this unflattering shape, which was pretty embarrassing to leave the house in, and you wouldn’t want to be seen dead in them.

We took the lenses and implanted them into a frame which was cool, suave, and stylish. Now you can wear these orange glasses outside without feeling like a complete nerd. They’re a great conversation starter and people are fascinated by how they work.

What time of day is best to use them and for how long?

60-90 minutes before sleep, put your Swannies on and continue to look at your smart phones, watch TV, or work on your computer. Don’t take them off at all until you’ve turned off your last light in bed.

We also recommend wearing Swannies if you are using electronic devices for prolonged periods during the day to reduce eye strain. We’ve also had customers report reduced headaches and migraines after wearing them during work.
